BENEFACTION
With regard to donations, it is worth singling out the cabinet of antiquities donated to ACG by
Alexander D. Kalovidouris, once a professor at Pierce College. The ACG Art Collection is privileged to receive the gift of artworks by electronic sculptor,
Gérard Haas. In recognition of ACG's longstanding support, contemporary artist
Takis made a donation and loaned a large number of significant pieces to ACG. Last but not least, mention should be made to the numerous donors who are credited by their name in the ACG Art Catalog and Website or have chosen to remain anonymous.
WAYS OF GIVING TO ACG ART
ACG Art is a vital and distinctive link in the breadth of educational and cultural programming that The American College of Greece provides to its community and the general public. The in-depth and hands-on learning opportunities that ACG Art offers inspires creativity and provokes inquiry. ACG Art's unique exhibitions and programs make a significant contribution to the cultural literacy of a diverse public. Your gift is critical in helping ACG Art to carry out its
mission and to make our stimulating exhibitions, programs, and services accessible to all. There are a variety of ways to give your support. Every contribution to ACG Art is greatly appreciated.
ACG Art is directly dependent on gifts and donations for the continuing enrichment of its collections, for further developing its activities, and for maintaining the high standard of its everyday functions and services. ACG Art is endowed by benefactors who offer gifts of valuable works of art, thus contributing in a decisive manner to the enrichment of its collections and the ongoing development of its varied cultural undertakings.
DONATIONS OF ARTWORKS
The College accepts gifts of single articles and entire collections of objects, which complement or expand its collections, in the following general areas:
Artworks by international artists, whose merit would meet the standards of the ACG Art Review Committee.
Works of art and other objects dating to all periods, which originate in the wider Greek world.
Objects created by other cultures which flourished in the regions bordering the Greek world and which offer comparisons with contemporary Greek artistic activity.
Historic heirlooms, documents and archives.
Photographic archives, including important and historic photographs.
Maps, coins and medals.
Garments characteristic of historic periods of Greece or abroad.
Archival material relating to the history of artists who are represented in the ACG Art Collection.
The ACG Art Collection has an interest in artworks and objects of historic value. After being presented to ACG Art, the items are carefully cataloged, treated in the relevant conservation laboratory, protected from further decay, and made available for academic research. Each object which is donated to ACG Art is identified in descriptions as "The Gift of..." or bears the designation "Acquired with the support of...". All objects are acknowledged as such whether in our Campus' exhibition venues, in temporary exhibitions in Greece or abroad, or in Greek or foreign publications.
DONATIONS MADE IN THE NAME OF OTHERS
Any gift to ACG Art may be described as having been donated in memory, honour, or recognition of the generosity of a given individual or group of individuals. Objects which are donated or acquired in this way are described as "The Gift of ..." with the additional designation "In memory/honour/recognition of the generosity of..." when they form part of the permanent exhibit of the College, when they are included in temporary exhibitions set up by third parties in Greece or abroad, and when they appear in Greek or foreign publications.
DONATIONS MADE BY INDIVIDUALS DURING THEIR LIFETIME
In certain cases ACG Art accepts gifts of objects, which remain in the possession of the donor during his lifetime. The objects come into the possession of ACG Art only after the death of the donor, his heirs, or at any other time specified by the donor. ACG Art retains copyright of the object from the day it is donated, as well as the right to borrow it on a temporary basis for the purpose of exhibiting it in its venuew or in temporary exhibitions organised in Greece or abroad. The object will be insured by ACG Art or the borrowing party before it leaves the possession of the donor. When included in a publication or exhibition, the object donated under the above conditions shall be described in the same fashion as objects which form part of the permanent collection of ACG Art, namely as "The Gift of ...".
ARTWORKS ON DEPOSIT WITH ACG ART
ACG Art agrees to accept objects on deposit when the owner of the object wishes to do so for reasons of security or in order to make the object accessible to the general public. The deposit may be made on a permanent basis, or for a limited amount or unspecified period of time, after which it is returned to the owner. ACG Art may request that the object is insured before it is presented to the College. ACG Art retains the copyright of the object for as long as it remains on deposit. Also, having obtained the owner's permission, it may lend the object for temporary exhibition to other museums in Greece or abroad. In this case the borrowing party is responsible for insuring the object, as is the case with items from the ACG Art Collection. In both the publications and exhibitions of the object, its owner will be designated in a fashion agreed between him and ACG Art, for example as "ACG Art, Deposit of ... " or "ACG Art, Anonymous Deposit".
CONFIDENTIALITY AND THE HONOURING OF DONORS
ACG Art seeks to establish a permanent relationship with all likely benefactors, even if the immediate benefits of their gift are not immediately apparent. ACG Art is likewise convinced that a relationship based on trust allows for a productive dialogue with all those who are interested in encouraging its work.
ACG Art will treat all information concerning a donation or the expressed wish to make a donation as confidential until the donor notifies ACG Art that s/he agrees to the public acknowledgement of his gift. If the donor so desires, his gift may be described as an 'Anonymous Donation', either permanently or for a set period of time. The donor or his/her legal advisor may announce his intention to make a donation to the President or the members of the Governing Council of the College, or to the Director or Legal Advisor of the College, all of whom are bound by the same rule of confidentiality.
All donors are recorded in the Book of Donations, which is maintained by ACG Art and available for consultation by all interested parties. Depending on agreement, the names of major benefactors may appear inscribed on marble/bronze plaques by the related artworks wherever they are exhibited. A room or building of the College may be named after a donor if it was acquired or constructed in its entirety as the result of a gift, or if all or most of the objects in the room were donated by a single donor or his family. In that case the name of the benefactor may appear inscribed on marble/bronze plaques at the entrance of the room or building.
