MEGAKLES ROGAKOS (England, London b. 1972)
Megakles Rogakos is a Critic and Curator of contemporary art. He obtained Masters Degrees from both the City University and from Goldsmiths; his theses were respectively titled Tate Gallery: Metamorphosis of an Arts Institution and HermAphroditism: Culture of Con-Fusion. Since 2000, Megakles has regularly guided at the Tate Gallery in London, giving tours and talks. In 2001 he began his research for Edward Lucie-Smith's book titled Art Tomorrow which was published in 2003.
While carrying out contracted work at Tate, Megakles began curating a series of multi-media exhibitions featuring international contemporary artists. In 2002 he curated his first exhibition titled Chaos: Contemporary Cosmologies at Bishopsgate Goodsyard in London, which featured purely installations. The following year he was commissioned to curate Narcissism: Self-Love to Death at Gozo Contemporary in Malta. In 2003 another commission came to curate Scenes in Perspective at ArTower Agora in Athens. Later in 2003 he curated The Rape of Europe at Luke & A Gallery, an exhibition that made news in The Times as a noteworthy attraction in the London art-scene. In 2004 Megakles dedicated himself exclusively to curating art exhibitions. His first exhibition in 2004 was A Drop of Dust, a Grain of Water at the Berliner Kunstprojekt. He then curated his first monographic exhibitions with roMANse of Brent McTavish at Adonis Art in London, then John Stathatos: Lumen at the Athens Gallery, and Barbara Nahmad: Yesterday Now at Image Contemporary Art in Arezzo and Fondazione Bandera in Milan.
In September 2004 Megakles was appointed Art Curator of The American College of Greece, and ACG Art is the outcome of his work. His first exhibition at this post, entitled ACG Art Highlights, featured works from the collection, and took place in spring 2005. In November 2005 he curated Pelagia Kyriazi: Psychographswith works in various art forms. In January 2006 he curated John Stathatos: The Book of Lost Cities, which brought together photography and literature. In February 2006 he curated Yannis Ziogas: Polyptych, which was a painting installation. In April 2006 he curated the seminal exhibition Reincarnated Painting: Sculpture by Ghika, which commemorated a centenary from the birth of Nico Hadjikyriaco Ghika. In March 2006 P37 Art Gallery of Piraeus commissioned him to curate Susanna Coffey & Suzanne Walters: Relative Diversions. In October 2006 he collaborated with the Hellenic Centre for Photography and IPRN at the Attica Tradition Educational Foundation in Athens to present Changing Faces: Work, which presented six positions of contemporary photography. In October 2006 he curated Electra's Adagio, an exhibition of recent paintings by Electra Tegopoulou. In April 2007 he curated ACG Art Highlights II., featuring recent donations and acquisitions in the ACG Art Collection. In June 2007 the Municipal Gallery of Kalamata commissioned him to curate the seminal group exhibition entitled In-Situations: Artworks in Time and Space by Contemporary Greek Artists. In the winter of 2007 he curated Giannis Stratis: Welcome to My World at Alex Marathianakis Down Town Art Gallery, Athens. In the spring of 2008 the Municipal Gallery of Corinth commissioned him to curate Andreas Golfinopoulos' homage entitled The Artist's 'Lykoporia'. In April 2008 Monohoro Art Gallery invited him to curate Katerina Aslanidou's exhibition Fragments of Nature. In October 2008 Titanium Art Gallery invited him to curate Vassiliki Koskiniotou : Origins and Ladders. Later in the year he curated Sylvia Sarropoulou: Flower Portraits at Ersi's Gallery. In December 2008 he inaugurated the College's ACG Art Gallery with Silent Dialogues: Multimedia Portraits throughout Time, his largest exhibition that covered 266 artworks. In February 2009 he curated Ellie Griva's installation under the peculiar title Yes. The Bound Home at Astrolavos Art Galleries, Athens. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of fraternization between the Municipalities of Lefkada and Shinjuku, the Cultural Center of Lefkada, commissioned him to curate Homage to the Relationship between Greece and Japan: Kostas Glenis, Dionysis Zois Zaverdinos, and Sotiris Therianos in August 2009 at Lefkada Town Hall. In October 2009 he curated Paul Serrada's Et in Arcadia Ego at Galerija Fotografija in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Later in October he curated The Open Mind of Lafcadio Hearn at the ACG Art Gallery, which subsequently travelled to the Cultural Center of Lefkada Municipality in August 2010, and highlights of which travelled to the namesake exhibition at Matsue Castle in October. To mark, in 2010, the centenary of the artist's birth he curated in December Frances Rich - La Gazelle (1910-2007), the third exhibition at the ACG Art Gallery. In the spring of 2011 Astrolavos Art Galeries engaged him in two consecutive exhibitions - Ellie Griva: 11 +-./... a love story in the intermediate time. / and Stamatina Doutsouli: Figures in Silence. In the summer of 2011 the Cultural Foundation of Tinos - I.TI.P. commissioned him to curate the Cyclades: Lands ~ Forms ~ Symbols exhibition at the Nikolaos Gyzis Gallery. He was commissioned to co-curate along with Eugenia Alexaki Encounters: Eclectic Affinities with the Art of Phaedon Anastasiadis that opened at Melina Mercouri Cultural Center in 2011 and travelled to the Teloglion Foundation of Art of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2012. In November 2011 he materialized the audacious exhibition sExplosion: Penis & Vagina Relationships in the Contemporary Visual Arts at the innovative and avant-garde cultural center Booze Cooperativa, Athens. Finally, the Association of Pensioners of the Bank of Greece commissioned him to curate Yannis Karavas: Travels at the Theatre Exhibition Hall of Psychiko College, Athens.
Parallel to this activity, Megakles has formally interviewed such artists as Louise Bourgeois, Alexander de Cadenet, Anthony Caro, Sumer Erek, Ulyana Gumeniuk, Nikos Kryonidis, Panagiotis Linardakis, Boris Lurie, Mina Luxa, Derek Marks, Yiannis Melanitis, Yiota Skarveli, Takis and Aglaia & Petros Xenakis, e.a. In 2002 Megakles published his first catalog, profiling the painter Anthony Scullion. He takes pride in naming Barbara Nahmad's 2004 exhibition Yesterday Now at Image Contemporary Art in Arezzo, and Fondazione Bandera in Milan.
In his capacity as ACG Art Curator, Megakles has been motivated to contribute to the ACG Art collection works that throw light on the history of art.
