PORTRAITS OF ACG PRESIDENTS

The portraits of Presidents of The American College of Greece cover the entire period of modern Greek art, throughout the twentieth century. All of the 14 Presidents in the College's 135-year history had their portraits done. The portraits of the first four Presidents - Maria West, Marcellus Bowen, Mary Lyon Page, and Agnes B. McCartney Lord - are by notable photographers, such as the Abdullah Frères, and are kept at the Houghton Library Archive, Harvard University. The portraits of the following ten Presidents are displayed at the foyer of the Pierce College Theater at ACG. These latter portraits are by artists renowned in their time, and are of historical importance today.

Significantly, the earliest portrait of Emily McCallum is a hand-painted sepia-print by Nikos Zografos, a great master in the history of modern Greek photography. The first portrait of Minnie Mills - not included in the display – is by Antonis Kanas, an acclaimed naturalist. The other portrait of Minnie Mills is by Antonis Polykandriotis, who is one of Greece's most gifted modern painters. In this instance Polykandriotis brings out the gentle nature of his sitter. A portrait of Kathryn McElroy by Ellie Orfanos is a fine example of post-war portraiture, characterized by an economy of detail and stark realism, known in art history as 'New Objectivity'. Then follow the portraits of Mabel Long and Helen Nichol, both by George Moschos who was a renowned realist painter. Another portrait by Antonis Polykandriotis, of Raymond Blakney, is truly admirable for its sketchily telling execution. The portrait of Margaret Steward is by Alkis Ghinis, who is Greece's finest surrealist. Notice the strong color, the eloquent forms, and the unusual selection of props used in this picture. Interestingly, the portrait of Louis Vrettos is evidence of a contemporary technique of print-transfer on canvas, which succeeds in capturing the minutest detail of the sitter's appearance. The portrait of William J. Villaume is created by Bachrach, which is America's oldest established photographic firm. Finally, the portrait of John S. Bailey was recently created by Petros Zoumboulakis.
