Artemis Alcalay was born on 23 October 1957 in Athens. Upon graduting from Pierce College, Alcalay studied painting at the workshop of Vrassidas Vlachopoulos (1974-1976). She continued her studies at the Athens School of Fine Arts of Athens - ASFA (1976-1981) painting with Dimitris Mytaras and Yannis Moralis; stage design with Vassilis Vassiliadis; history of art with Marina Lambraki-Plaka; and history of architecture with Pavlos Mylonas. She studied for an M.A. in Studio Art at New York University (1998-2002) with Angiolla Churchill; Steven Madoff; Jerry Pryor; Philip Rylands; Livio Seguso; and Idel Weber. Upon her return to Greece in 1985 she studied Weaving with M. Leonidou at YMCA of Kifissia (1998-2002). Between 1992 and 2004 Alcalay has produced sets and costumes for the following theatre / dance productions: Okyroe, Modern Dance Group, Vasso Barboussi (sets and costumes); Deree Dance Company, Valery Harden (sets); Lathos Kinisi, Konstantinos Michos (costumes); Metakinesi, Maria Tsouvala (costumes); Schedia, Anastasia Lyra (costumes); Aikinitron, Nina Alcalay (costumes); Natassa Avra (costumes); and Paiktes Theater Group, Maria Savva (costumes). Alcalay collaborates with Aslanogou Contract Carpets as designer of hand-tufted carpets.
