CM: Dr. William Villaume was an outstanding educational administrator, who began his duties as President of Pierce College on 1 July 1970. While President of Waterloo Lutheran University in Waterloo, Ontario, the University grew from five hundred eighty-five to over seven thousand students, from two to eighteen buildings. Before that, he was Executive Director of the Department of Social Welfare for the National Council of the Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. He was consultant to the Board of College Education of the American Lutheran Church and acting President of the board's International University in Freeport, Bahamas.
Dr. Villaume was an alumnus of Wagner College, New York, and did post-graduate work at Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Columbia University. He received his doctorate in sociology and social ethics from Hartford Seminary Foundation. He was a fellow of the American Sociological Association anmd the Gerontological Society, a charter member of the Academy of Certified Social Workers, and member of many professional societies. He was delegate to the World Conference on Faith and Order in 1963, the White House Conference on Education in 1955, Canadian Conference in Eductation in 1962, and a group leader at the Lutheran World Conference on Social Responsibility in 1957. He has been honoured by the alumni associations of both Wagner and Hartford, and received the Shepherd's Award from the Department of Social Welfare, National Council of Churches for creative and distinctive contirbution in social welfare.
Dr. Villaume was an author and frequent contributor to professional journals. Many time honoured, he brought to Pierce College a distinguished record of accomplishments in the educational, church, and social welfare fields.
Dr. William Villaume's original portrait of ca. 1970 by Fabian Bachrach (24x19), kept at ACG Presidential Archive, was enlarged and transferred onto canvas in 2008 to join the other Presidential portraits at Pierce Theater Lobby.
