Christos Caras was born on 9 December 1930, in Trikala, Thessaly. From 1948 to 1950 he began his higher education at the Pandios School of Political Sciences, but in 1951 he enrolled in the Athens School of Fine Arts and received a diploma in 1955. From 1957 to 1960 he studied fresco painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris with a grant from the Greek State Subsidy Society. There he experimented at with gestural painting and collage. Though based in Paris up to 1963, he travelled all over Europe to visit major international exhibitions. In 1973 he left Europe for New York on a Ford Foundation scholarship. He worked there for two years and had the opportunity to travel within USA and to Canada.
