MANLIO GUBERTI-HELFRICH (Italy, Ravenna 1917-2003 / act: Monte d'Arca) |
Artist, painter, poet and writer Manlio Guberti-Helfrich had an extraordinary artistic career and multifaceted personality. He deserves to be remembered for his successful American experience, especially his art in the desert, which won him the accolade of Honorary Mayor of Tombstone, and an encomium in the Arizona Daily Star newspaper regarding his unique ability to "really capture in paint the charm of the desert". In the United States, Guberti-Helfrich also met and became friends with director George Cukor's famous actors Spencer Tracy (1900-1967) and Katharine Hepburn (1907-2003). He was a passionate lover, keen sailor, and author of the first manual on silk-screen printing for artists and the prestigious Hoepli Manual, published by "La Vela" and considered a classic of its genre. Guberti-Helfrich remained attached to Italian traditions and to those of his hometown, which is not surprising, considering that his father was the famous Roman playwright Eugenio Guberti (1871-1944).
