CM: Katerina Kana's Myself as a Clown is an unusual self-portrait of the artist. Kana has said: "Myself as a Clown brings out the friend in me. When I saw Giulietta Massina in Federico Fellini's La Strada (1954), I fell in love with the role of the clown. Giulietta's face was friendly and funny, her childlike smile was tender and reassuring. She made me associate the clown with someone that makes funny faces, tells jokes, and turns sadness into joy. Over the years the clown changed. Nowadays the archetype of a clown is gone. Movies use clowns in roles that are bad or evil in order to evoke fear or terror. In my attempt to recreate Giulietta Massina's face I imagining myself in her place. There was a familiar feeling about the clown; like the smell of baked cake, like recognizing a place I had never visited before. Seeing now Myself as a Clown I ask myself: Has it always been me?"
