CM: Already since 1988 the work of Dimitris Merantzas revealed his reflection on the relationship between photography and painting. As known, Merantzas is a pioneer of the so-called 'photochemical painting' using chemical materials - developer and fixative - over photographic paper. The key incentive of Merantzas is to breach the basic principle of photography, creating original works with chemicals intended to produce images by causing shadows and lights on photosensitive paper.
The Variation on the Scream of Munch #01 is part of an installation from the series Reality is the Informer of Imagination, which begun to form since 1996, and will be presented in the near future. The installation will present scrap pistols spread on the floor of a room, on which the visitor should balance while traversing the space in order to encounter the Variations on the Scream of Munch, all of which will be displayed as a frieze surrounding the space. Merantzas conceived this idea in 1996, when Europe entered into a war situation. The tragedy of the threat of war is still valid with unabated force. The gaping mouth and startling eyes of the Variations on the Scream of Munch express eloquently the endless tragedy of current human anguish. This Variation on the Scream of Munch #01 is the first photochemical painting in the series. The mouth and eyes have been rendered gesturally to look at their roundest, under the artist's complete control of composition.
