CM: The portrait of Dr. Kathryn McElroy by Ellie Orfanos was executed after the artist received her diploma in painting in 1946, when she was teaching art at The American College for Girls in Athens (1946-1955). This is a fine example of post-war portraiture, characterized by an economy of detail and stark realism, and known in art history as "Neue Sachligkeit" (New Objectivity). Despite her accomplishment in painting, Ellie Orfanos was eventually to become known as an expert on the technique of making mosaics.
