Carlos Pérez Macias was born in Managua of Nicaragua in 1950, the son of a coffee trader and a housewife. He went to Catholic School and studied Law at the Jesuit University of Nicaragua. Between 1974-1978 he studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts, in Paris, France. Parallel to his studies and up to 1981 Pérez Macias worked as freelance photographer for New York Times and Elle Magazine. He moved to New York in 1979, Nicaragua during the revolution in 1981, and Los Angeles in 1983. He entered the City College of Los Angeles to study Cinema and graduated in 1989.
