Vasilis Sambatakos was born on 4 February 1937 in Athens, Greece. He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts (1956-1961) drawing with Yannis Moralis and printmaking with Kostas Grammatopoulos. He worked as head of the art department at the National Mint of Greece (1969-1992). He had custody of coins and banknotes, but worked privately with medals. Since 1982 he began a 10-year collaboration with Mr. Harris Gyras, director of ‘Antika’. Beginning with the Pan-European Championship in Athens in 1982 he created a series of medals on the theme of sport and the Olympic ideal.
