CM: While studying art, Apostolos Tatolas was affected by the purity of traditional Japanese architecture, the geometric forms in the paintings of Peter Halley, the simple shapes in the compositions of Pit Mondrian and the pure areas in the architecture of Gerrit Rietveld. In Tatolas' art designs pristine geometry is of utmost importance. His art is driven by a well-meant obsession with pure geometric forms and the order given by the grid at regular intervals, resembling Japanese screens. Thus, in 2008 Tatolas constructed his unique Divider and Box. In particular the Divider refers to Japanese door with a rectangular grid. Tatolas is interested in a dynamic that may change appearance. The viewer is invited to engage with the work by composing the work's color patterns on his own thus creating subjective areas within an objective region. The Divider and Box combines the Japanese conception of space with Western chromatic applications.
