CM: Alkis Voliotis photographed the visual artist Jannis Kounellis (b. 1936) in March 2008 at home in Rome. The present picture is amongst the earliest ones the photographer took of his model. From his experience Voliotis knows that the first photographs of a person bring out the sitter's essence with all the freshness and the charm of the initial contact, characterized by embarrassment and eagerness. This photograph presents Kounellis frontally before a work of his made of his favourite sheet metal. The face is loose and exhales smoke of tobacco. The shape of smoke formed in front of his mouth resembles a ghost, as if his breath gives form to an idea of his. The afternoon daylight tends towards the red from the impact of spring. Voliotis arrested Kounellis' determination and the conviction that what he does his work well. The printing presents Kounellis life size, which creates the feeling of intimacy with the viewer.
