Ioannis Grigoriou Xanthakis was born in 1880 on Syros Island, Greece, and worked there initially as a film-maker. Eventually he became a photographer and run a photographic studio till he settled in Athens. In Athens he opened a studio by the name 'Photo-Xanthakis', first at 22 Romvis Street, then at 16 Evangelistrias Street, and finally at 7 Stadiou Street. Anastasios Koutsoukos, eventually known as 'Elite', run Xanthakis' studio from 1935 until 1945. Ioannis Xanthakis became President of the Union of Greek Photographers, which included 28 members of a total of 150 photographers known to be active in Athens and Piraeus.
