CM: The Portrait of General Basil Vassiliades (d. 1909) is the earliest of Zographos' work in the ACG Art Collection, and belongs to his early period in Athens (Zographos would have migrated from Smyrna in September 1922 or before that time). The newspaper sheet used to strengthen the rear of the picture, dated 13 December 1924, serves to place this work sometime within that year. General Vassiliades having died on 15 January 1909, Zographos must have appropriated a pre-existing photograph on a smaller scale, which he subsequently enlarged. Basil Vassiliades, great-grandfather of donor Lydia Vassiliades, was General in the Greek Army and had fought in the Balkan Wars between 1912 and 1913. The sitter appears in full military attire with the pride that corresponds to a general of his time. The portrait has a large oval shape and consists of a photograph for the figure against a light ground, all of which has been drawn over by graphite and pastels.
