In-Situations: Artworks in Time & Space by Contemporary Greek Artists

MUNICIPAL GALLERY OF KALAMATA 08/06-08/09/2007

Opening at 20:00 on Friday, 8 June 2006

The Kalamata Municipal Organization for Cultural Development - DEPAK inaugurates the contemporary art exhibition entitled In-Situations: Artworks in Time and Space by Contemporary Greek Artists at the Municipal Gallery of Kalamata at 20:00 on Friday, 8 June 2007.

In-Situations comprises exclusively of installations - an art form, which is now widely known in the world. Hosted by the Municipal Gallery of Kalamata - which from this year onwards is dedicated to the memory of A. Tassos (Lefkochora of Messinia 1914 - Athens 1985); the artist par excellence of the traditional two-dimensionality - In - Situations reflects the further capacity of art. The installations presented herewith concern some of the most remarkable expressions of contemporary Greek artistic production. As Megakles Rogakos notes in the exhibition catalog: "Installation concerns a hybrid form of art, which combines images and sounds in a given site that is completed by the presence of the beholder and - often - also the artist. [...] Installation is inspired by life itself, and 'marries' anthropology to art, reflecting on the various states of our collective unconscious. This latter point - of engaging with innermost situations of the psyche and the spirit - is crucial, and allows the coining of the present exhibition's unusual title In - Situations. [...] As a matter of fact Installation may be more suitable than other art forms in elucidating our space, time, epoch and its conditions because its means are direct and physical. It gives us a sense of the dimensions of our everyday environment; it inspires us to momentarily abandon real time and to immerse ourselves in its embrace; it puts us on the map of socio-political 'happening'; it sensitizes us to the unique experiences art offers on the big issues of life, to which the solutions are - in keeping with the today's claim - plural rather than singular."

In-Situatitions includes 15 installations by the following artists: Artemis Alcalay (1957); Angelos Antonopoulos (1957); Pandelis Chandris (1963); Panos Charalambous (1956); Mark Hadjipateras (1953); Fotini Kariotaki (1962); Stavroula Kaziale (1962); Harris Kondosphyris (1965) & Manos Kornelakis (1961); Nikos Kryonidis (1963); Panayotis Lambrinidis (1966); Eleni Mylonas (1944); Thanasis Pallas (1961); Aemilia Papaphilippou (1961); Costas Varotsos (1955); and Yannis Ziogas (1962).

DEPAK is a non-profit cultural organisation established in 1985 whose main goal is to implement an integrated cultural development program for the city of Kalamata and the broader region by creating the necessary infrastructure to promote intellectual expression.

Megakles Rogakos is the Exhibition Curator of In-Situations. He studied Museum Management and History of Art in London (1997-1999), worked at the Tate Gallery (2000-2004) and was appointed ACG Art Curator at The American College of Greece in Athens (2004).

In-Situatitions is hosted at the Municipal Gallery of Kalamata (5 Papazoglou Street, Kalamata, Messinia, GR 24100, Greece, T: +3027210 88991) and will run from 8 June through 8 September 2006. The exhibition will be open 19:00-15:00Saturday; 15:00-21:00 Tuesday and Thursday, 09:00-14:00 Wednesday and Friday.
