Murshida Arzu Alpana was born on 1 August 1961 in Dhaka, Bangladesh. She studied drawing and painting fine arts at the Institute of Fine Arts, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh (1977-1983). She received a Master of Fine Arts in Painting at Visva-Bharati University, Santiniketan, India (1986-1988) with K.G. Subramanyan and Jogen Chowdhury. She received a Master of Experimental Painting at Hochschule der Künste - HdK, Berlin, Germany (1996-1998) with Karl Horst Hodicke. She received the following scholarships: Ministry of Education and Culture, ICCR, India (1986-1988); and Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst - DAAD, Berlin, Germany (1993-1995). She has received the following awards: Khawaja Shafique Ahmed Memorial Award in Watercolor, Dhaka (1980); Best Award in Class, Dhaka (1982); Schilpacharjya Jainul Abedin Award, Dhaka (1983); Best Overseas Artist Award in Oil, ROSL Golden Jubilee Trust, London (1992); 2nd Prize in Watercolor, 7th & 8th Annual International Exhibition of Miniature Art, Toronto, Canada (1993); 3rd Graphikprize of Griffelkunst, Hamburg (1995); 2nd Prize Award by Young Music, Munich (1996); 1st Prize Award by Young Music, Munich (1999); People & Technique, CECMG Hanover (2003); Best Women in Bangladesh, Ananna Fine Arts Organization, Dhaka (2006).
