TX: inscribed at rear in French <CH. BERGAMASCO / PHOTOGRAPHE DE SA MAJESTÉ L'IMPERATRICE / ET DE PLUSIEURS COURS / ST. PETERSBOURG // PERSP. DE NEVSKY, 12>
CM: George D. Levides (1857-1933), great grand father of ACG Art donor Lydia Vassiliades, was Ambassador of Greece in many of the world's capitals, including Alexandria, Constantinople and Saint Petersburg. The medallions that were awarded to Charles Bergamasco, which are reproduced at the rear of the print (including Zweite Ausstelung Photograph Arbeiten of 1866, International Exposition of Philadelphia of 1876, Exposition Universel International de Paris of 1878, Amsterdamsche Photographen Vereeniging of 1885) suggest this portrait to have been made around 1890. It was this print that was appropriated by Carl Böhringer for the retouched Portrait #1 of Ambassador George D. Levides <BoeC1900lev1> and enlarged in Portrait #2 <BoeC1900lev2>.
